PNW

NW Documentary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to build regional capacity for nonfiction storytelling. We offer filmmaking workshops, project support, access to equipment, and a creative community to anyone with a story to tell.

EVERYONE

HAS

A STORY

NW Documentary was founded in 2003 with a DIY spirit and a goal to make filmmaking tools and skills accessible to everyone — to help new projects get started and old projects get finished. We support projects of all kinds and sizes, and filmmakers of all backgrounds and skill levels.

STORIES

CREATE

COMMUNITY

NW Documentary has seen how stories bring people together. Subjects and storytellers. Creative teams. Films and audiences. Stories of all sizes. The density of storytelling shapes our social landscape — stronger stories create stronger communities.

Wiseman Marathon: 44 Films in 6 Days

A collaborative project between NW Documentary, the Nyback Archive and Spectrum Between. As a tribute to the late great Frederick Wiseman, we (and one narrative) more or less chronologically over the span of 6 days. It is a marathon undertaking (literally) as it will run 24 hours a day kicking off at 7pm on April 29th and wrapping up at around midnight on May 4th. Come see one or many works in his celebrated body of verité documentaries.

Mike Turner at NW Doc in March

Join us in March for a series of Thursday evening screenings and events featuring Oregon filmmaker Mike Turner. We’ll watch two of his films and one he selected, and on the last Thursday in March he will share clips from his new project and reflect on his experience creating and distributing indie docs. Seating is limited for Thursdays at NW Doc. Drop-ins are always welcome but preference given to those who RSVP below.

Website Still Under Construction

Please bear with us. A slow rolling update and long overdue. The site is being constructed live. In the spirit of NW Doc it’s a website as a work-in-progress. If you find yourself on an unfinished page that’s why.

If you have web development or graphic design skills, or an interest in developing those skills and would like to help reach out to: sam@nwdocumentary.org

Sunnyside Love

Willamette Week included the Sunnyside Community Center in their “Reasons to Love Portland” Valentine’s Day issue. We’re proud to be part of this community. NW Documentary isn’t mentioned, but we’re here working in the background like any good documentary filmmaker would be.
